The organisation's 'Give Warmth' campaign aims to collect blankets for animals housed at the shelter, many of which are accommodated in outdoor kennels, says the organisation.

TEARS Operations Manager Mandy Store says the shelter has already experienced cold temperatures and heavy rainfall since the start of winter, placing additional pressure on its resources.

"With only one washing machine, it is a challenge to wash and dry the number of blankets needed to keep the animals warm," says Store. "Most of our dogs are housed in covered outdoor kennels, but temperatures can still become extremely cold during winter."

According to Store, fleece blankets are particularly needed as they provide greater warmth and durability compared to other materials. Donations can be dropped off directly at the TEARS shelter or at any of the organisation’s thrift shop locations, adds the organisation.

Members of the public who wish to contribute remotely can also purchase blankets online and have them delivered directly to the shelter at 4 Lekkerwater Road, Sunnydale, Fish Hoek.

The organisation has also encouraged pet owners to ensure their own animals remain sheltered and warm during adverse weather conditions. In addition, TEARS says adoptions remain an important part of its operations, as each successful adoption creates space for another rescued animal to receive care, concludes the organisation.
